About PEERs

UCLA PEERs For Preschoolers Social Skills Group

LEAF is a certified UCLA PEERS® provider, offering the only research-based social skills program of its kind.

Our PEERS® for Preschoolers program is designed for children ages 4–6 and runs over 16 weeks. This evidence-based intervention teaches parents how to coach their child in developing foundational social skills. Each week includes engaging lessons, role-play videos, and interactive puppet shows to help children learn and practice key social behaviors in a fun, developmentally appropriate way.

Each week, parents attend interactive training sessions while children engage in fun and engaging lessons through role-play videos, puppet shows, and hands-on activities. By learning together, families build practical strategies for improving peer interactions, friendship-building, and social confidence at home, school, and beyond.

Children may be eligible to participate in the PEERS® for Preschoolers program if they meet the following criteria:

  • Age Range: 4 to 6 years old
  • Language Ability: Uses phrase speech (minimum 3–5 word sentences) and can follow simple directions
  • Social Challenges: Demonstrates difficulty with peer interactions, such as initiating or maintaining play, turn-taking, or emotional regulation
  • Cognitive Skills: Has age-appropriate cognitive abilities (as determined through screening or reports from teachers/therapists)
  • Parental Involvement: At least one parent or caregiver must commit to attending the weekly parent training sessions and supporting home practice activities
  • Behavioral Readiness: Can participate in a small group setting with minimal behavioral support (e.g., no frequent aggression or elopement)

Is PEERS® for Preschoolers Right for Your Family?

Does your child struggle with making or keeping friends? Do they have a hard time sharing, taking turns, or joining in play with others? If so, you're not alone—and the PEERS® for Preschoolers program may be a great fit for your family.

This program may be a good fit if:

  • They can use short sentences and follow basic directions

  • They need help with social interactions, friendships, or emotional regulation

  • You are willing to attend a weekly parent session and practice skills with your child at home
